Legal Requirements
Under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act:
• Riders under 18 years old are REQUIRED by law to wear a helmet
• Riding without a helmet if you're under 18 can result in fines of up to $75
Exemptions are made to individuals that:
For Riders 18 and Older:
While helmets are not legally required for adults, SCOOTY strongly recommends that ALL riders wear a helmet, regardless of age. Head injuries can happen to anyone, and a helmet significantly reduces the risk of serious injury.
Why Wear a Helmet?
• Reduces risk of head injury by up to 85%
• Protects against traumatic brain injuries
• Sets a good example for other riders
• Gives you confidence to ride safely
What Kind of Helmet:
Any properly fitting helmet is better than none. Options include:
• Bicycle helmets
• Skateboard helmets
• Multi-sport helmets
Make sure your helmet:
• Fits snugly but comfortably
• Sits level on your head
• Has a secure chin strap
• Is certified for safety (look for CPSC, ASTM, or Snell certifications)
SCOOTY and Helmets:
SCOOTY vehicles do not come with helmets. If you plan to ride regularly, we recommend purchasing your own helmet for the best fit and protection.
Your head is precious - protect it!

- has unshorn hair; and
- habitually wears a turban and, at the time of driving, is wearing a turban
- 18 years or older
